If you still remember classic titles like Nascar Rumble, Vigilante 8, Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, or Crash Team Racing (CTR), then hey — we’re probably the same generation.
There’s no denying that Sony’s very first console was a treasure trove of nostalgic games.
Just seeing the names brings back that urge to relive the golden era of the PlayStation 1.
Sure, you can now play these games on your smartphone, but let’s be honest, the vibe just isn’t the same.
We miss fighting over turns at the game rental shop, hanging out with friends, laughing out loud at in-game moments, and so many other little things that made it special.
To help ease that nostalgia, we’ve put together a list of the all-time best PS1 games. Maybe this article is just what you need to relive those sweet memories from the past.
If you’re curious, why not spare a few minutes and enjoy the trip down memory lane?
The Best PS1 Games of All Time
Lately, I’ve been diving back into some PS1 classics using the ePSXe emulator, trying to decide which ones really deserve the title of “the best.”
These are my top 10, and I hope you’ll agree with at least a few of them.
1. Harvest Moon: Back to Nature

Taking the number one spot is Harvest Moon: Back to Nature — a game that’s incredibly memorable, especially thanks to its iconic soundtrack.
This life-simulation game has always been one of my personal favorites. In Harvest Moon: BTN, you’ll learn how to manage a farm properly and responsibly.
The story begins after your grandfather passes away, and you inherit his rundown farm. It’s your job to restore it back to its former glory.
If you succeed in rebuilding the farm within three years, the villagers of Mineral Town will officially welcome you as one of their own.
Aside from farming, you’ll also need to build good relationships with the townspeople by talking to them every day or giving them gifts they like.
And here’s the fun part, you can even marry one of the five bachelorettes in the village!
Honestly, I could go on and on about how amazing this game is, but I don’t want this article to get too long.
So if you want the full deep dive, feel free to check out my Harvest Moon: Back to Nature Guide, it covers everything you need to know about the game.
2. Crash Team Racing (CTR)

This one’s a must-have in any PS1 library, Crash Team Racing!
It’s a kart racing game that’s super fun, quirky, and totally addictive. Every character has their own kart, which you can customize and upgrade.
Each track has its own vibe and difficulty level, with a variety of landscapes and styles, from tropical beaches to ancient ruins.
What really makes CTR stand out is its unique racing modes. The controls are super responsive and easy to pick up, and there are tons of ways to drift and boost around corners like a pro.
You can gain an edge over your opponents by using a wide range of power-ups, from rockets and TNT crates to nitro boosts. Pure chaos, in the best way possible.
3. Resident Evil 2

If you’re a fan of Resident Evil, then Resident Evil 2 is a must-play.
You take control of rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield as they try to uncover the truth behind a terrifying zombie outbreak in Raccoon City.
Your main goal? Find a way to escape the city while unraveling the mystery behind the infection.
Resident Evil 2 had stunning visuals for its time. Each location feels distinct and full of personality, and the enemies you face are seriously creepy, and tough to kill.
The story is gripping, the characters are well-developed, and the music adds just the right touch of eerie atmosphere.
It’s survival horror at its finest!
4. Gran Turismo 2

The developers of Gran Turismo 2 went all out to create a realistic racing simulation, and it shows.
The visuals were impressive for the time, with beautifully rendered cars and tracks that really brought the racing experience to life.
Besides the standard racing mode, there’s also a career mode where you can compete to earn credits, which you can then use to upgrade your ride or buy new cars.
Racing on the tracks feels incredibly satisfying, thanks to the game’s sharp and precise controls.
And let’s not forget the audio, it’s top-tier. From the roar of the engines to the sound effects on the track, everything sounds crisp.
Plus, the soundtrack is a total vibe, blending pop, classic rock, and electronica, easily one of my favorite parts of the game.
5. Metal Slug X

This one’s a personal favorite! In Metal Slug X, you play as a badass special forces soldier fighting your way through wave after wave of increasingly tough enemies.
To survive, you’ll need quick reflexes, sharp shooting skills, and the ability to dodge like a pro.
As you progress, you can loot boosters and pick up new weapons, and trust me, you’ll need them.
From standard machine guns to rocket launchers and bazookas, the weapon variety keeps things exciting and explosive.
Metal Slug X has aged like fine wine, the visuals still look amazing even today. The environments, enemies, animations, and characters are all beautifully crafted.
And let’s not forget the soundtrack, it’s packed with awesome, energetic tracks that totally amp up the action.
6. Final Fantasy VII

There’s no way I could leave Final Fantasy VII off this list, it’s a global top-ranking game and a true classic.
Back then, the graphics absolutely blew me away. For its time, the visuals were cutting-edge, with stunning environments and surprisingly realistic characters.
What stuck with me just as much was the music — beautiful, unforgettable tracks that still echo in my head long after playing.
The story is packed with friendship, betrayal, and epic adventure, and it’s just as gripping today.
Replaying it now, I find myself even more invested in the characters and their relationships, which feel surprisingly real and emotionally grounded.
The turn-based combat system is super engaging, especially with the addition of Materias, summon spells, and limit breaks, which make battles more strategic and exciting.
Boss fights in particular are major highlights, they really test your skills and keep you on your toes.
All in all, Final Fantasy VII is hands-down one of the best RPGs ever made for the PS1. It’s a timeless masterpiece, so much so that it even got a full remake for the PS4 and PS5.
7. Tekken 3

This one needs no introduction, Tekken 3 was a household name for 90s gamers.
It marked a huge leap forward in both gameplay and visuals, and quickly became one of the most played entries in the series.
For a PS1 title, the character models looked incredibly realistic, with smooth animations and detailed textures that still hold up today. And let’s not forget that unforgettable soundtrack, truly iconic.
When it comes to gameplay, Tekken 3 is in a league of its own. You can choose from a wide variety of fighters, each with their own unique fighting style and set of signature moves.
The controls are super responsive, making every punch, kick, and combo feel satisfying. And the tough AI opponents add a serious challenge when playing solo, which makes the victories even sweeter.
8. WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role

For fighting-game fans, WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role is often the top pick. It lets you step into the ring with legendary WWE superstars like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, and plenty more.
The mechanics are easy to grasp. From singles and tag-team bouts to ladder matches, there’s a match type for every mood.
Controls are intuitive and beginner-friendly, yet deep enough for seasoned players to flex their skills. Visually, the game was cutting-edge for its time, and the soundtrack perfectly matches the high-energy vibe in the ring.
Career Mode is where things get really addictive: guide your chosen wrestler to the top of the WWF rankings, create a unique avatar, level up their skills, and test your build against the rest of the roster.
Ready to lay the smack down? This game still delivers that ringside rush.
9. Vigilante 8

If you’re a fan of racing games with a twist, Vigilante 8 is a PS1 gem you shouldn’t miss.
Think of it as a video game version of Death Race, fast cars, wild weapons, and total mayhem.
You can choose from a variety of vehicles, each equipped with its own unique weapons. The battle arenas are just as diverse, my personal favorite is the snowy map (though I can’t remember the name).
The gameplay is a blast. You’re thrown into an open combat arena with multiple enemies, and if you’re playing multiplayer, your own friends can become your worst nightmare.
Your main objective? Wipe out every enemy vehicle and be the last one standing.
Explosive, chaotic, and endlessly fun, Vigilante 8 is the kind of game that turns every race into a battlefield.
10. Spider-Man

Rounding out my list of the best PS1 games is none other than Spider-Man.
This game nails everything you’d expect from a Spidey adventure, swinging through the city, wall-crawling, saving civilians, battling bad guys, and of course, stopping Doctor Octopus’s evil plans.
For its time, the visuals were seriously solid, and the controls felt smooth and intuitive. The Spidey’s Challenge minigame was also a fun bonus, racing against the clock to complete tricky objectives.
Throughout the game, you’ll face a variety of villains and tackle clever puzzles, which actually make some of the levels pretty tough. But with enough time and effort, those challenges are super satisfying to beat.
What really adds to the experience are the cinematic cutscenes sprinkled throughout the game.
They give the whole thing a cool, comic book–style vibe that makes it even more enjoyable to play.
Conclusion
So, that’s my list of the top 10 best PS1 games — each one holds a special place and created unforgettable memories. From the peaceful farming life in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, chaotic racing in CTR, to epic battles in Final Fantasy VII and intense fights in Tekken 3, these games are pieces of childhood that are too precious to forget.
Even though times have changed and graphics are way more realistic now, these games still have a special spot in the hearts of many gamers. They’re not just games — they’re part of those sweet memories of hanging out with friends in front of a small TV, fighting over controllers, and laughing together.
If you grew up in the PS1 era, I hope this list brings you back to those days — and maybe even makes you want to revisit these classics through an emulator or a remake.
Because sometimes, nostalgia is the best game we can play.
