Cliff is one of the characters in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. He’s a drifter who somehow ended up in Mineral Town.
He stays at the Inn, and Doug seems to like having him around. You’ll often find him spending time at the Church with Carter.
Cliff is really shy and seems to carry a lot of emotional baggage. He tends to keep his distance from most people until you become friends.
At the start of the game, he’s unemployed. But through certain events, he can land a job at Aja Winery.
If he doesn’t get the job, Cliff will eventually leave Mineral Town for good. He’s also your rival for Ann’s heart.

Rival Events
These events showcase the growing bond between Cliff and Ann. If you don’t marry Ann by the time the final event occurs, she and Cliff will get married a week after the last scene.

As you enter the Church, Ann arrives to deliver a meal for Carter. She sees Cliff and invites him to return to the inn for a break.
Cliff politely declines, saying he’d rather stay at the Church a little longer. Ann understands and reminds him to be back before dinner.
Event 2

- Location: 2nd Floor of the Inn
Head upstairs at the inn and you’ll find Ann bringing a lunch tray to Cliff. He’s surprised, saying he didn’t order anything.
Ann then casually asks why he’s been staying at the inn for so long. Cliff becomes a little distant, and Ann quickly apologizes, realizing her question may have been too personal.

- Location: Inn
Ann asks Cliff how long he plans to stay in Mineral Town. Cliff replies he doesn’t really know. Ann says maybe he could stay forever—then immediately backtracks, joking that someone out there is probably waiting for him.
Cliff quietly replies that no one is waiting for him anymore. Ann apologizes and suggests he could stay here if he wants. Cliff responds by saying he’s not sure he can be happy if he’s alone. He then walks away, leaving Ann behind.

Ann brings Cliff some snacks and says her father (Doug) always wants to make sure Cliff is eating well. Cliff thanks her, appreciating the gesture, but notes it might be better if they don’t talk much back at the inn.
Ann self-consciously says she must be boring to talk to. Cliff immediately assures her she’s not boring at all and that he enjoys talking with her. Ann becomes flustered and quickly excuses herself.

In this final event, Doug asks Cliff about his plans—whether he intends to stay in the village for good.
Cliff gives a positive response, hinting that he’s found a reason to stay—implying his growing feelings for Ann.
Note: Seven days after this event, Cliff and Ann will get married (if you haven’t already married Ann yourself).
