Kai is one of the characters in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. He only comes to town during Summer, when he opens and runs the Seaside Lodge at Mineral Beach.
Kai is popular with the girls and often rubs the local guys the wrong way with his laid-back attitude. Even so, he means well—he just feels misunderstood because of how cheerful and carefree he is.
During Summer, he meets Popuri, which leads to some tension between him and Rick. If you don’t pursue Popuri, Kai and Popuri might end up getting married. If that happens, Popuri will leave town with Kai—but don’t worry, they’ll both return every Summer.

Rival Events
Kai and Popuri have a unique summer romance. If you don’t marry Popuri by the final event and make a specific choice, she’ll eventually marry Kai.
Event 1

You’ll see Kai chatting with Popuri and complimenting her kindness. Rick storms in and defensively tells Kai to leave her alone.
Popuri snaps at Rick and asks Kai to come inside. Kai refuses, saying Rick clearly doesn’t want him there and that Popuri should listen to her older brother.
Popuri angrily says she hates Rick and invites Kai in again, but Kai gently declines, saying he only dropped by to say hello before leaving.

Popuri asks Kai why he doesn’t stay in town year-round. Kai says he prefers warm places and hates the cold.
Popuri mentions that she loves summer because that’s when Kai opens his restaurant. Kai thanks her and promises to return again next summer.

Kai asks Popuri if she really plans to live in the village forever. She says no—she wants to leave someday.
When Kai questions her seriousness, Popuri gets upset and insists that she is serious, but worries about leaving her mother and Rick.
Kai brushes it off, saying she can leave any time she wants, with or without a reason.

Kai apologizes for what he said the day before, and Popuri forgives him. Though he now believes she might be serious about leaving, she tells him she feels obligated to stay for her family.
Kai says she seems happy here, so maybe she doesn’t really want to leave. But Popuri confesses that she does want to leave—because she wants to be with Kai.
She says it hurts when he leaves every year without her.

Kai stops by to say goodbye and tells you he plans to take Popuri with him when he leaves this time.
After Kai leaves, Rick shows up and asks if you’ve seen Popuri. This is where your choice determines their future:
