Affection is an important element in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. This feature is based on a point system used to measure your friendship level with villagers and marriage candidates.

Raising affection is essential to build relationships with the characters in the game. As a bonus, they might give you cooking recipes, trigger special cutscenes, or even become your future wife if you’re courting one of the five bachelorettes.

Aside from villagers, the Harvest Sprites also have their own affection system. For livestock, all you need to do is take good care of them—such as feeding and interacting with them—and their affection will increase naturally.

Villagers

All characters (including your child) start with 50 Affection Points (AP), and you can raise this up to a maximum of 225 AP. Talking to them or giving gifts will increase their AP by the next day.

Once a villager’s affection reaches 200 AP or more, they may say different dialogue, showing that they now consider you a close friend.

Harvest Sprites

Harvest Sprites have a unique affection system. Their affection points are hidden and increase in increments of 25 AP.

Asking them to help on the farm reduces their affection by 2 AP. The same gift-based affection system used for villagers also applies to the Sprites.

Each Sprite has hidden skill levels for farm tasks, and they all start with no skill. For example, Chef starts with zero watering skill. If you assign him to water crops, his skill will gradually increase over time.

Each time you make a Sprite work, their skill level increases by one. A Sprite’s maximum skill level is 225.

In Harvest Moon: Back to Nature (HM BTN), there are tons of recipes you can cook using ingredients from the Supermarket, animal products, crops, and wild items you can find around Mineral Town.

How to Unlock Cooking

You’ll unlock the cooking feature after upgrading your house for the first time through Gotz. Once that’s done, you’ll get a kitchen and access to the TV Shopping channel.

How to Get Cooking Utensils

To get cooking tools, just watch the TV Shopping channel. After that, head over to the Inn and use the phone there (it costs 10 G per call) to place your order.

Waterfall Mine

Location: South of your farm, beside the Hot Spring.

• Accessible in all seasons.
• Time stops while inside.
• The mine has 10 randomly generated floors.
• Use a hoe to uncover the hidden staircase to proceed.
• Staircases never appear on the edge tiles and usually appear diagonally across from where you entered the current floor.
• To exit, simply climb the staircase on your current floor to be returned outside.

You can find ores, money bags, and even a randomly buried Power Berry.

Winter Mine

Location: Small island in the center of the lake at Mother’s Hill Base.
Accessible only in Winter, when the lake is frozen solid.

• The mine has 10 random floors, and a hidden underground lake on the lower floors where the legendary Catfish can be caught.
• Use a hoe to find the hidden staircase.
• As with Waterfall Mine, staircases do not spawn on edge tiles and usually appear diagonally across from your entry point.

Fishing in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature is a fun and relaxing way to spend your extra time during the day. You can catch fish, discover rare items, and even become the Fishing King if you’re dedicated enough.

How to Start Fishing

To begin fishing, you first need to obtain a Fishing Rod. Here’s how:

• Go to Mineral Beach between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM.
• You’ll find Greg standing near the boat.
• Talk to him and say you want to fish. He’ll then give you a Fishing Rod.

You can fish in any body of water in the game. There are three basic fish sizes:

In addition to fish, you might also catch trash (like boots or cans), cooking recipes, or other location-specific items.

How to Fish

• Equip the fishing rod and face the water.
• Hold the Square button until your lure shakes, then release it.
• If you’re lucky, you’ll reel in a fish!

Be careful not to litter—throwing trash carelessly into the shipping bin may increase trash pollution. Confessing at the church can lower your pollution level.

Fish Pond System

Harvest Moon: BTN introduced a fish pond where you can raise your own fish. The pond is located next to the chicken coop.

• You can store any caught fish (Small, Medium, or Large) in the pond.
• Feeding fish will help them breed and grow in size.
• Fish food is available at the supermarket.

Fish from the pond can be:

• Given as gifts
• Eaten

Keeping or selling a large number of fish is essential for unlocking certain events, like getting the Fishing Pole.

Fishing Pole (Rod Upgrade)

The Fishing Pole is an upgraded version of the Fishing Rod, which makes catching fish faster and easier.

To obtain it:

• Have at least 50 fish in your pond.
• Greg will visit your farm and gift you the Fishing Pole, impressed by your fish collection.
• Make sure to have at least one inventory slot open, and do not leave the screen before talking to Greg, or you’ll miss the opportunity permanently.

Legendary Fish

There are six Legendary Fish in the game, each with specific conditions. They’re easier to catch using the Fishing Pole, and once you catch all six, Greg will appear and grant you the title Fishing King.
