  • Power Berry

In Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, Power Berries are special items that permanently increase your stamina.

There are 10 Power Berries in total scattered throughout Mineral Town, plus one unique item called the Mystic Berry, which reduces your fatigue (FAT).

Collecting all 10 Power Berries and the Mystic Berry will significantly boost your character’s endurance, making it easier to perform daily tasks like farming, caring for animals, and mining.

This guide details how to obtain each one of these berries.

    1. Cedar Tree – Mother’s Hill

Go to Mother’s Hill and attempt to cut down the large cedar tree with your axe. When the tree speaks and pleads, stop cutting. You’ll receive a Power Berry as a reward. If you continue chopping, you’ll faint and wake up at the clinic.

    2. Waterfall Mine

Dig in the Waterfall Mine (beside the hot spring) using your hoe. The Power Berry is randomly located between floors 1 to 10.

    3. Harvest Goddess

Throw 5 crops (e.g. turnips or potatoes) one per day into the waterfall to summon the Harvest Goddess. She will reward you with a Power Berry after the fifth offering.

    4. Swimming Festival

Win the Opening Day Swimming Festival on Summer 1 at Mineral Beach. Save beforehand in case you lose.

To win, tap X rapidly until your character’s face turns yellow and straight, then hold Triangle until it changes to a smiling yellow face. Repeat this rhythm to swim efficiently.

    5. Beside the Winter Mine Entrance

During Winter, walk across the frozen lake on Mother’s Hill to the cave entrance in the middle. Press X on the right side of the entrance to pick up a hidden Power Berry.

    6. Winter Mine

Dig inside the Winter Mine using your hoe. The Power Berry can usually be found around the 3rd floor. This mine is only accessible during Winter when the lake is frozen.

    7. Fishing at Mineral Beach (Winter Only)

    8. Anna’s Gift

Plant at least 91 flowers on your farm. Once they bloom, Anna will visit your house after 12:00 PM.

Choose the option “Give her everything she wants” when she asks to take some flowers. She’ll reward you with a Power Berry. Flower seeds can be bought from Won at the inn.

    9. TV Shopping Channel

    10. Horse Racing Festival

Trade 1001 medals for a Power Berry at the Horse Racing Festival held at Rose Square. You can win medals by betting on horses or racing yourself if you choose to participate. Talk to Mayor Thomas to place your bets.

The Mystic Berry (also called the Secret Berry or Special Berry) is a one-of-a-kind item that reduces your fatigue (FAT).

How to Get the Mystic Berry:

    3. Go to Mother’s Hill Lake between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

  • Villagers Birthday

Giving gifts to villagers in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature generally increases their affection toward you. Interestingly, if you give them a favorite gift on their birthday, their affection will increase significantly.

You can use this to build stronger friendships with the townspeople. Wrapping gifts with Wrapping Paper from the Supermarket also grants bonus affection points.

This guide lists the villagers’ favorite and liked gifts based on their birthdays. Note that marriage candidates have alternate birthdays, ensuring their birthdays don’t clash with the player’s.

Only favorite and liked items are included in this list. For more detailed gift preferences, please check our Villager Guide and look for the “Gifts” table.

  • Crops

As a farming sim, Harvest Moon: Back to Nature naturally puts a lot of focus on growing crops. You can make the most of your wide farmland by planting a variety of vegetables, fruits, and flowers throughout the seasons.

There are two types of crops in the game:

    • Single-harvest crops: Can only be harvested once per seed bag.
    • Multi-harvest crops: Will regrow and can be harvested multiple times after the first harvest.

Some crops are available from the start, while others need to be unlocked by meeting certain conditions or triggering events.

For example, Strawberry seeds are not available early in the game. To unlock them at the Supermarket, you need to have shipped 100 units each of Turnip, Potato, Cucumber, and Cabbage.

Additionally, Won sells exclusive seeds that aren’t available in the Supermarket, such as flowers, Pineapple, Green Pepper, and more.

    How to Plant Crops

    1. Clear your field of any weeds, stumps, or branches.
    2. Use your Hoe to till a 3×3 area—this is the perfect size for 1 bag of seeds.
    3. Stand in the center tile of the 3×3 square and plant the seeds. If you’re not in the center, some seeds will be wasted.
    4. Use your Watering Can (holds up to 100 units of water) to water the seeds once a day, except when it rains.
    5. When crops are fully grown, you can harvest them to:

Crops wither at the end of each season, so make sure to harvest them before the next one begins!

Withered crops can be removed using the Sickle, and you can start planting new seasonal crops right away.

Nothing grows in Winter unless you have a Greenhouse!

Some crops can also be used for animal feed. For example, throwing one Corn into the Water Mill near the Chicken Coop gives you 10 Chicken Feed.

If you grow Grass (from Fodder Seeds), you can harvest it using a Sickle to get Fodder, which is food for Cows and Sheep.

You can also ask the Harvest Sprites to help with watering or harvesting—very useful during storms or when you’re too busy!

  • Dogs

The Dog is another pet you can raise in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. While it doesn’t produce any items or help you harvest crops, it plays an important role in protecting your farm and can even participate in a special event!

You’ll get your puppy right at the start of the game, and as time passes, it will grow into a loyal adult dog. With enough affection, your dog can also enter the annual Dog Race Festival.

    Growth Stages

When you begin the game, you’ll be introduced to a small puppy. Over time, the puppy will naturally grow into an adult dog.

Your dog has a hidden stat called Intelligence, which starts at 0 and never decreases. This stat affects how well your dog performs in the Dog Race Festival.

You can increase its intelligence by training it with a ball. You can buy this toy ball from Won. Just toss the ball in front of your dog, and it will run to fetch it. Each day you train it, your dog will gain +3 Intelligence points.

To max out its intelligence, you’ll need to train your dog consistently for around 85 days. If you also care for it lovingly each day for about 60 days, its affection will reach the maximum.

    Affection System

Your dog’s affection starts at 10 AP (Affection Points). You can increase or decrease this by interacting with it in different ways.

Things like whistling or picking it up will increase its affection, while hitting it with tools or leaving it outside in bad weather will lower it significantly.

Like the horse, affection-raising actions only count once per day. And just like the horse, the dog can’t get sick or die, but negative actions will still affect its trust in you.

    Here’s a quick reference table:

    ActionAffection Point
    Pick up the dog+2 AP
    Whistle to the dog+2 AP
    Ignore it all day-1 AP
Leave it outside during bad weather-5 AP
Hit the dog with a tool-10 AP

    Events

    Dog Breeding

On Spring 2 of Year 2, Barley will visit your farm to talk about his female dog, Hana. He’s looking for a mate and thinks your dog is a good match.

Your character automatically agrees, and Barley takes your dog to Yodel Ranch for the mating process.

You can visit and interact with your dog at the ranch during this time, but you won’t be able to bring it home until the process is complete.

A week later, Hana gives birth to two puppies. Barley will keep one for himself and ask who should take the other. You’ll have to choose between giving it to Stu or Harris.

Fun fact: While you won’t get to keep the puppy yourself, this event strengthens your bond with the villagers and gives your dog some extra spotlight!

  • Horse

The Horse is a helpful companion in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. While it doesn’t produce any products like cows or sheep, it helps you carry harvested crops and can even be entered into a racing event!

You’ll receive the horse from Barley at Yodel Ranch, but it starts off as a young pony. If you take good care of it, it’ll grow into a full adult, and Barley will reward you with a saddlebag, allowing you to ride it and use it to carry items.

The horse can also participate in the Local Horse Race held every Spring 18.

    Growth Stages

    Pony

In your first Spring, if you visit Yodel Ranch, a cutscene will play where Barley and May are talking about a sad little pony.

Barley thinks the pony needs someone to raise it, and since you just happened to be passing by, he asks if you’d take care of it. If you accept, you’ll get to name your new pony.

Barley explains that you need to brush, talk to, and keep the pony indoors during bad weather like rain or snow.

After the event, the pony will be waiting at your barn. You can brush it using the brush tool, which you can buy from Saibara’s shop. To move the pony in or out of the barn, just push it toward the door.

    Adult Horse

After about one in-game year, your little pony will grow into a fully grown horse. Barley will visit and give you a saddlebag, which allows you to ride the horse and use it to carry items.

Tip: Just toss fruits or veggies into the saddlebag to have the horse carry them for you!

The horse also has a hidden stamina stat, starting at 0. It doesn’t decrease, but goes up every time you ride it and make it jump—gaining about +3 stamina per day.

More stamina means better chances at winning the Horse Race. So the more often you ride and train your horse, the stronger it gets!

If your horse has less than 8 hearts when Barley comes to check on it (about a year after giving it to you), he’ll be disappointed and take it back because he thinks you’re not taking good care of it.

    Getting the Horse Back

So… Barley took your horse? No worries, there’s still hope!

Here’s how to get a new one:

    • Plant 200 tiles of grass (you’ll need 23 bags of Grass Seeds, sold at the Supermarket for 500 G each).
    • Once the grass has grown, Barley will show up and say how nice your pasture looks.
    • He’ll give you a new pony, and you’ll get to name it again.

To raise its hearts and max out its stamina, you’ll need to care for it daily for around 85 days.

    Affection System

Your horse has Affection Points (AP), which determine how much it trusts you. It starts with 0 AP, and the maximum is 255 AP.

You can only earn each type of AP bonus once per day. For example, brushing your horse twice in one day only gives you the AP bonus the first time.

Also, horses can’t get sick or die, but certain actions can lower their affection.

Here’s a quick chart of how affection changes:

    ActionAffection Point
    Whistle to your horse+2 AP
    Brush your horse+2 AP
Do not brush, ride, or whistle at all in one day-1 AP
Hit the horse twice with tools-1 AP
Hit the horse three times-1 AP
Let it get attacked by a wild dog-1 AP
Let a wild dog bark at it for a long time-1 AP
Leave it outside overnight in rain/snow/storm-5 AP
  • Sheep

Sheep are one of the most profitable animals you can raise on your farm. They produce Wool, which can be sold for a good amount of money. You can buy sheep from Barley’s Yodel Ranch.

If your sheep wins the Sheep Festival, it’ll start producing Golden Wool, which sells for a higher price than regular wool.

    Growth Stages

Sheep go through three stages of growth:

    1. Lamb – Too young to produce anything.
    2. Adult – Ready to grow and produce wool.

    Lamb

Lambs come from breeding adult sheep. A few days after the pregnancy is confirmed, the mama sheep will give birth to an adorable little lamb.

At this stage, you can’t shear the lamb yet. It takes about 15 days for it to grow into a full-grown sheep.

    Adult Sheep

Adult sheep can be sheared for wool using a clipper. Their wool grows back every 7 days.

If you forget to feed your sheep for a day, the wool will take one extra day to grow back.
If your sheep wins the Sheep Festival, it will start producing Golden Wool permanently.

    Breeding

Healthy adult sheep can be bred using a Miracle Potion, which you can buy from Yodel Ranch.

Once a sheep is pregnant, she can’t enter any festivals until after she gives birth. Just talk to her and brush her every day to keep her happy. After 21 days (counting from the first day of pregnancy), she’ll give birth to a lamb.

Lambs can’t produce wool, but their mom can be sheared again shortly after giving birth.

    Daily Care

After you get your sheep, caring for it is pretty simple. Feed it, talk to it, and give it a brush once in a while.

To boost affection, interact with them every day and make sure they’re well-fed. If you plant grass in your field, you can let them out to graze when the weather’s nice. Make sure to bring them back inside if it looks like rain.

If you don’t feed your sheep, their wool growth will be delayed by a day.

Leaving sheep outside during bad weather can make them sick. Sick sheep won’t heal on their own, so you’ll need to buy Animal Medicine from Yodel Ranch. If you ignore them, they might die.

    Feed

Just like cows, sheep eat Fodder, which is a type of dried grass. There are two ways to get it:

    • Buy from Yodel Ranch (20 G per piece), or
    • Grow your own by planting Grass Seeds from the Supermarket (500 G each).

Once the grass is fully grown, use your sickle to harvest it. One patch of grass gives one piece of fodder. The best part? The grass will grow back after a few days, so it’s cheaper than buying fodder every time.

You can also let your sheep graze outside if the weather’s good. If it’s raining and you run out of fodder, just cut some grass from your field and feed it to your animals.

    Affection

Sheep start out with 10 affection points (AP) when you buy or breed them. The max is 255 AP, which equals 10 hearts (1 heart = 25 AP).

You can raise their affection by 4–5 AP per day by talking to them and feeding them. Brushing or shearing doesn’t increase affection.

If you take care of your sheep every day, it’ll take about 48 days to max out their affection. The more hearts they have, the better the wool they produce.

Here’s a chart showing how different actions affect affection:

    ActionAP Change
    Talk to your sheep+3 AP
    Let them graze outside+2 AP
Feed them in the barn+1 AP
Hit them with a tool-1 AP
Let a wild dog bark at them-1 AP

    Wool

Sheep grow wool every 7 days (as long as they’re healthy and well-fed). The size of the wool depends on how many hearts they have. If your sheep wins the festival, it’ll start producing Wool G (Golden Wool).

  • Chicken

Aside from cows, chickens are also a reliable source of income in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. With just one chicken, you can collect eggs to sell, use in cooking recipes, or even give as gifts to villagers.

You can purchase chickens at the Poultry Farm for 1,500 G each. They’re easy to care for and can become even more profitable once you have a Mayonnaise Maker, which turns eggs into mayonnaise—greatly increasing their selling price.

Compared to cows and sheep, chickens are the easiest livestock to raise. Just feed them daily, and they’ll stay happy and healthy. If a chicken wins the Chicken Festival, it will start producing Golden Eggs, which sell for a much higher price.

    Growth Stages

    Chickens have two growth stages:

    • Chick – Hatch from incubated eggs and take 9 days to grow into adults. Chicks don’t need to be fed but also don’t lay eggs.
    • Adult Chicken – Once fully grown, they will lay eggs daily as long as they’re fed. Egg quality depends on the chicken’s affection level.

    Incubating Eggs

To get more chickens without spending money, place a regular egg in the incubator inside the chicken coop. After 3 days, it will hatch into a chick.

Note: Chicks don’t show hearts and don’t need to be fed.

    Daily Care

Chickens live inside the coop, where time is frozen—so feeding and collecting eggs won’t waste your in-game time.

Each chicken has its own feeding trough, and you only need to feed them once per day.

If you run out of chicken feed, you can:

    • Buy more from Poultry Farm
    • Let your chickens outside on sunny days to peck at bugs and worms naturally

Always remember to bring them back inside before evening to avoid bad weather or wild dog attacks. Chickens left outside during storms or cold weather will get sick and stop laying eggs.

    Healing Sick Chickens

Sick chickens won’t move, and their icons on the menu screen will appear dim or pale. To heal them, buy Animal Medicine from the Poultry Farm. They will recover after a few days of treatment.

Tip: Always treat sick chickens, especially if they lay Golden Eggs!

    Chicken Feed

Chicken feed costs 10 G per unit at the Poultry Farm. You can also make your own feed by placing Corn into the Water Mill beside the coop. One corn produces 10 feed units.

To save money, let chickens forage outside on sunny days so you won’t need to use up your stored feed.

    Affection System

Chickens start with 10 Affection Points (AP), with a maximum of 255 AP (1 heart = 25 AP).

Affection only increases through feeding. Each day you feed a chicken, it gains +10 AP. It takes at least 24 days of consistent feeding to reach 10 hearts.

Here’s how different actions affect affection:

    ActionAffection Change

  • Cow

One of the main livestock animals—and also a great source of income—in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature is the cow. You can buy one at Barley, Yodel Ranch for 6,000 G. After purchase, the cow will be delivered straight to your barn, where you can name it and raise it.

Adult cows produce milk every day. If you enter one of your cows in the Cow Festival and win, it’ll start producing Gold Milk (Milk G). To enter the contest, your cow needs to have 9 hearts or more.

    Growth Stages

Cows go through three growth stages:

    • Calf – Baby cows that can’t produce milk yet. Calves are obtained through breeding and take about 15 days to grow into a young cow.
    • Young Cow – This is the stage of a cow you buy from Yodel Ranch. With proper care, it’ll grow into an adult in 14 days.
    • Adult Cow – Adult cows can produce milk daily as long as they’re happy, healthy, and not pregnant.

Winning the Cow Festival with an adult cow will upgrade its product to Milk G, which sells for more than regular milk.

    Breeding

Healthy adult cows can be bred using a Miracle Potion, which costs 3,000 G at Yodel Ranch. During pregnancy, cows won’t produce milk or be able to enter festivals.

Pregnancy lasts 21 days, and after giving birth, the cow can start producing milk again. Just talk and brush your pregnant cow daily until it gives birth.

    Daily Care

To keep your cow happy and productive:

    • Feed it daily with fodder.
    • Talk to it.
    • Brush it occasionally.
    • Let it graze outside on sunny days.
    • Bring it inside during bad weather.

If a cow goes unfed for a day, it won’t produce milk the next day (or even the one after). Leaving a cow outside during rain or storms can make it sick. Sick cows won’t get better on their own—you’ll need to buy Animal Medicine from Yodel Ranch. If left untreated too long, the cow might die.

    Fodder

Cows eat fodder, a type of dried grass. You can get fodder in two ways:

    1. Buy it at Yodel Ranch for 20 G each.
    2. Grow your own by buying Grass Seeds (500 G) from the Supermarket, planting them in your field, and harvesting them with a sickle.

Each patch of grass gives one fodder, and grass will regrow after a few days. You can also let your cows graze directly on it during sunny days—just don’t forget to bring them inside when the weather turns bad.

    Affection System

Cow affection starts at 10 AP and maxes out at 255 AP (1 heart = 25 AP). You can raise affection by doing simple daily tasks:

    ActionAffection Change
    Talk to the cow+3 AP

    Not feeding the cow-9 AP
    Hitting with tools-9 AP

Leaving cow out in bad weather-120 AP

It takes a minimum of 48 days of consistent care to reach 10 hearts. Higher affection means higher quality milk!
