During your first or second year, Gray will visit your farm early in the morning. He’s upset with his grandfather, Saibara, and expresses a desire to work on his own.

Gray will ask if he can use your Water Mill to craft a Hammer, and in return, he’ll offer to help clear your field once.

A few days later, Gray will return and ask you to test the Hammer he made. Unfortunately, as soon as you try using it, the hammer breaks.

This incident is witnessed by Mary, who later scolds Gray at Rose Square. However, this also leads to Gray thanking you for your support, which will increase your friendship with him.
