There are 39 characters in Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. These include:
- 5 bachelorettes you can marry
- 27 regular villagers, and
- 7 Nature Sprites
You can build friendships with the villagers by giving them gifts they like. As they warm up to you, they’ll start to open up and share more of their lives with you.
Getting close to certain characters can also unlock special areas in their homes, give you recipe gifts, or trigger unique cutscenes.
We’ve listed each character’s favorite gifts, daily schedules, events, and birthdays. Just click on a character’s name below their picture to see their full info.
Marriage Candidates

Ann is Duke’s daughter. She’s a tomboy with a lively personality. She loves cooking and eating, and she also helps her dad run the inn by cleaning and preparing food for the guests.

Elli works as a nurse at the clinic in Mineral Town. She lives with her little brother Stu and her grandma Ellen. Elli is a kind-hearted girl who enjoys helping others and truly cares about her job.

Karen is a strong, independent girl who tends to be serious and straightforward in relationships. She’s the daughter of Jeff and Sasha, and works at the local supermarket.

Mary is a shy and quiet girl who runs the Library. She loves books and finds them “peaceful and fun.” You’ll usually find her there reading or working, except on Mondays when the Library is closed.

Popuri lives at the Poultry Farm with her mom and older brother. She’s a cheerful and sweet girl. Even though she loves her family, she finds farming boring and dreams of seeing the world.
Rivals

Cliff is a wanderer who finds his way to Mineral Town. He stays at the Inn and often spends time at the Church with Carter.

Tim is a quiet and serious doctor who works at the Clinic. He puts all his heart into helping patients and feels frustrated when he can’t heal people like Ellen and Lillia.

Gray is Saibara’s grandson and apprentice. He’s learning to become a blacksmith, but often feels discouraged by his grandfather’s tough attitude.

Kai is a laid-back guy who only visits Mineral Town during Summer. He’s popular with the girls and often comes off as dismissive toward the local guys.

Rick is Popuri’s big brother and Lillia’s son. He takes care of the Poultry Farm and works extra hard since his mom is sick. He absolutely loves chickens.
Villagers

Anna is Basil’s wife and Mary’s mom. She’s often seen gossiping at Rose Square with her friends Sasha and Manna.

Barley runs Yodel Ranch and sells livestock like cows and sheep, as well as other farm animal supplies.

Basil is a botanist who spends his time studying plants and writing books for the Library.

Carter is the priest at the Mineral Town Church. He’s kind, faithful, and always willing to help, especially toward people like Cliff.

Doug is the innkeeper and lives at the Inn with his daughter Ann. His wife passed away long ago, and he’s doing his best to raise Ann on his own.

Duke runs Aja Winery with his wife Manna. He handles the vineyard and production of wine and grape juice, while Manna sells their products in the mornings.

Ellen is Elli and Stu’s grandmother. She used to work as a midwife in town, but now she’s retired and spends her days at home.

Gotz is the local woodcutter. He lives in his Woodcutter’s House and handles all your house upgrades and building projects.

Greg is a cheerful fisherman. He gives you your first fishing rod for free the first time you meet him.

Harris is the town policeman and Mayor Thomas’s son. He takes his job seriously and patrols the town in all weather. He misses Aja, Duke’s daughter, and feels lonely without her.

Jeff owns the Supermarket. He’s a kind but timid man who often struggles to stand up for himself or others.

Kano is a photographer who lives with Mayor Thomas and Harris. He says he has a long history in Mineral Town and has been taking photos for 20 years.

Louis is a beekeeper and Gotz’s friend. He lives with Gotz at the Woodcutter’s House. He often mentions his late daughter, whom he clearly misses deeply.

Lillia is Rick and Popuri’s mom. She runs the Poultry Farm store and is known for her gentle and kind nature.

Manna is Duke’s wife and Aja’s mother. She helps run Aja Winery and sells wine and juice from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

May is Barley’s granddaughter. She lives at Yodel Ranch and often plays with Stu near the Church. She’s shy and has been raised by her grandfather ever since her mother left.

Saibara is the town’s blacksmith. You can visit his shop to upgrade tools, craft machines, or create accessories.

Sasha works at the Supermarket with her husband Jeff and daughter Karen. She’s more assertive and outspoken than Jeff.

Stu is Elli’s little brother. He spends time with his grandma Ellen and often plays with May. He also secretly likes her.

Thomas is the mayor of Mineral Town. He lives with his son Harris and Kano the photographer. He organizes most town festivals and keeps a close eye on the townspeople.

Won is a traveling merchant who loves money. He’s known for charging high prices and sometimes being a bit shady in his dealings.

Zack is in charge of shipping your farm produce. He buys your crops, animal products, and any forageables you collect from nature.
The Nature Sprites are magical little helpers who live behind the Church. There are seven of them: Aqua, Bold, Chef, Hoggy, Nappy, Staid, and Timid.
You can befriend them by giving them gifts and ask them to help out with chores like watering crops or taking care of animals.
