When you enter the church, Carter isn’t inside. You notice the right side door is unlocked. You walk through and find Carter talking to himself among the trees behind the church. He’s complaining about not having much money but admits he still enjoys some little luxuries.
Carter gets startled when you suddenly appear behind him. He remembers he left the door unlocked—he was so happy he forgot. He tries to explain he came back here to clean, but you’re not convinced. Carter breaks down and admits he sneaks back here to gather mushrooms.
Mushrooms grow in this small forest during autumn, so this is his chance to enjoy a treat since he doesn’t have much money. He doesn’t want anyone else eating his delicious snack, so he keeps it a secret.
Carter asks you to keep this just between the two of you.

He understands; it’s not something he needs to hide anymore. From now on, he’ll leave the door unlocked and you’re free to come back anytime.
The forest behind the church has various wild items you can collect year-round. Autumn is the best time to find the rare Matsutake mushrooms. Another spot to find these mushrooms is behind the large rocks near Mother’s Lake, which requires a Silver Hammer (level 3) or better to break through.

- Autumn: Blue Magic Flower, Matsutake, Mushroom, Orange, Sunsweet Flower, Poison Mushroom, Red Grass
- Winter: Orange Grass, White Grass
Since the backyard of the church is an open area, time passes as you explore among the trees. Carter locks the front church door at 10 PM, but the back door remains unlocked so you can leave.
If you return to the church after that time, you’ll see a short dialogue about quietly passing through because Carter is asleep.
