In Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (SoS FoMT), tools are essential for managing your farm. Upgrading them will increase their efficiency, area of effect, and unlock new capabilities.
Starting Tools
When you begin the game, you are given five Level 1 tools:
- Hammer
- Hoe
- Sickle
- Axe
- Watering Can
These tools are enough for basic farming tasks like tilling soil, watering crops, and clearing small obstacles. However, Level 1 tools cannot break large stumps or big rocks.
Fishing Rod
The sixth tool is the Fishing Rod, which you can receive from Zack at Mineral Beach.
Requirements:
- Talk to Zack at least once beforehand.
- Leave at least one empty slot in your backpack.
Once these conditions are met, entering his house will trigger a cutscene where he gives you the rod. You can then fish in any body of water in Mineral Town.
Tool Area of Effect by Level
| Ore Type | Hoe | Sickle | Watering Can |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old/Iron | 1 x 1 | 1 x 1 | 1 x 1 |
| Copper | 2 x 1 | 1 x 3 | 1 x 3 |
| Silver | 3 x 1 | 2 x 6 | 2 x 6 |
| Gold | 4 x 1 | 3 x 3 | 3 x 3 |
| Mithril | 6 x 1 | 5 x 5 | 3 x 5 |
| Cursed/Blessed | 6 x 5 | 7 x 7 | 6 x 9 |
| Mythic | 9 x 9 | 9 x 9 | 9 x 9 |
- Hammer and Axe: These target a single rock or stump but will break it faster with higher upgrades.
- Mythic Hammer/Axe: Will smash all objects in the target area when charged. Be cautious before using them!
- Fishing Rod: Each upgrade level increases your chance to catch better fish. The Mythic Rod improves bite rate by 20%.
Upgrading Tools
To upgrade tools, visit the Forge run by Saibara.
- Location: North of your farm
- Open: Friday to Wednesday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- Closed: Thursdays and festival days
Saibara also sells items like the Brush for caring for animals.
Requirements to Upgrade Tools:
- Tool EXP – Use the tool to earn experience points.
- Ore Material – Found in the Spring Mine.
- Money – Each upgrade costs G.
| Upgrade Level | Ore Required | Cost | Minimum Tool EXP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | Copper Ore | 1,000 G | 10% |
| Silver | Silver Ore | 2,000 G | 28% |
| Gold | Gold Ore | 3,000 G | 55% |
| Mithril | Mithril Ore | 5,000 G | 100% |
How to Gain Tool EXP:
- Use the tool for its intended purpose: +100 EXP
- Swing the tool (even without using it properly): +50 EXP
Max EXP per tool: 65,535 (100%)
You can earn EXP inside your house, barns, or the Spring Mine/Lake Mine.
You can skip upgrade levels. If your Hoe is at Level 2 but has 100% EXP, you can go straight to Mithril, skipping intermediate levels. Each skipped level adds 1 extra workday to the upgrade process.
Mining for Upgrade Ores
All ores are found in the Spring Mine, and better ores appear on deeper floors. Use your Hammer to smash rocks to uncover ores.
Common Ore Locations (Approximate):
- Copper Ore: Floors 1–10
- Silver Ore: Floors 10–50
- Gold Ore: Floors 50–100
- Mithril Ore: Floors 100+
Upgrade Tips:
- Track EXP: Go to the Tools tab in your menu and press E (on PC) to check the tool’s EXP.
- Forge Downtime: Saibara won’t accept new upgrades while working on another tool.
- Pickup Timing: Collect tools during open hours (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM). He won’t hand over completed tools on Thursdays or festival days.

Cursed Tools
During Winter, special tools called Cursed Tools can be found in the Lake Mine. This mine becomes accessible only in Winter by walking across the frozen lake on Mother’s Hill.
Each of the six main tools has its own cursed version, which is buried in the soil of specific floors:
| Floor | Cursed Tool |
|---|---|
| 29 | Cursed Fishing Rod |
| 39 | Cursed Hoe |
| 49 | Cursed Axe |
| 59 | Cursed Hammer |
| 69 | Cursed Watering Can |
| 79 | Cursed Sickle |
Requirements
- Your existing tools must be upgraded to Mithril level (Lv. 5) before the cursed version will appear.
- You must have at least one empty slot in your tool bag.
- Cursed tools are not guaranteed to appear on the floor every time — the chance is determined when you first enter the floor.
Cursed Tool Hunting Tips
Because cursed tools are randomly buried and stamina is limited, you can use a Save/Load trick to make searching more efficient:
Recommended Strategy:
- Go one floor above the cursed tool floor (e.g., floor 38 for the Cursed Hoe).
- Find the staircase leading to the next floor, then save your game.
- Go down to the target floor and save again in a separate slot.
- Use your Hammer to smash ore rocks and your Hoe to dig soil.
- There are no traps on cursed tool floors.
- If you don’t find the cursed tool, reload your first save and try again.
If You Find a Cursed Tool:
- The tool will always be in the same spot as long as you don’t leave the floor.
- You can note the location, reload your second save, and go directly to that tile to dig it up in one swing — saving stamina.
Important Notes:
- Cursed Tools will not replace or overwrite your Mithril tools.
- You can store Lv.6 Cursed Tools in the Tool Box and still use your Lv.5 tools freely.
However, once equipped, cursed tools cannot be removed unless they are blessed.
How to Remove Cursed Tools (Uncurse)
To un-equip or remove a cursed tool:
- Visit the Church and talk to Carter.
- He will only bless tools during Confessional hours:
- Monday and Wednesday, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
- Or on rainy or snowy days, also between 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
- The cost to remove the curse is 1,000 G.
Once blessed, the cursed tool will be removed from your equipped slot and placed into your backpack.
Blessed Tool

Once a Cursed Tool has been obtained, it can be permanently cleansed of its curse and upgraded to a Blessed Tool (Lv. 6). The method to remove the curse depends on the tool:
| Tool | How to Remove the Curse |
|---|---|
| Cursed Hoe | Ask Carter to bless it 5 times in the Confessional |
| Cursed Watering Can | Ask Carter to bless it 5 times in the Confessional |
| Cursed Sickle | Equip it as your active tool for 5 consecutive days |
| Cursed Hammer | Equip it as your active tool for 5 consecutive days |
| Cursed Axe | Swing it 50 times using full charge (you must have enough stamina) |
| Cursed Fishing Rod | Swing it 50 times using full charge (you must have enough stamina) |
Note: Passing out due to exhaustion while using a cursed tool does not count toward unsealing it.
Blessing Tips:
- In the original GBA version, the requirements were much harsher: 255 swings, 10 days equipped, or 10 blessings.
- Cursed tools consume a large amount of stamina, so try to use them strategically until they are unsealed.
- Once blessed, the tools become significantly more efficient and are a necessary step before obtaining Mythic Tools.
Mythic Tools

The final upgrade tier in the game is the Mythic Tool (Lv. 7). To unlock this upgrade path, you must first have all six tools in their Blessed form.
Finding Mythic Ore
Once all Blessed Tools are obtained, Mythic Ore will begin to appear in the Spring Mine on the following floors:
60, 102, 123, 152, 155, 171, 190, 202, 222, and 231–255
- Mythic Ore only appears when you first enter the floor, so using a Save/Load trick is recommended to ensure you find at least one each visit.
- If a Goddess Jewel is present on the same floor, that space is already taken and a Mythic Ore will not appear there. Try to collect all Goddess Jewels beforehand to increase your chances.
Upgrading to Mythic Tools
Once you have Mythic Ore:
- Bring it to Saibara at the Forge.
- He will only upgrade your original tool (not the cursed or blessed version).
- Each Mythic upgrade costs 50,000 G and takes 7 days to complete.
- The upgraded tool will now reach Level 7, with maximum area effects and efficiency.
