Farm Land

In this article, we’ll dive into everything you need to know about managing your farmland in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (SoS FoMT).

When you were a child, your grandfather’s farm was in great shape. After he passed away, the land became neglected. Now, the farm has been passed down to you, and it’s your job to restore it to its former glory.

The majority of your farmland consists of crop fields — a large 25 by 43 plot designated for growing vegetables, flowers, and grass for fodder.

At the start, the fields are cluttered with big rocks, weeds, and stumps. You’ll need to clear them using your Hammer and Axe. Some larger obstacles require upgraded tools. (See the Tools Guide for more information.)

Aside from crop fields and grazing areas for livestock or pets, your Fish Pond can be used both for drawing water for your watering can and storing fish you’ve caught.

Preparing the Fields

To grow crops, you’ll first need to till the soil. Seeds can only be planted in specific seasons: Spring, Summer, or Autumn.

You cannot plant seeds before their appropriate season (e.g., Summer seeds on Spring 30). Seasonal crops will wither on the first day of the new season. Nothing grows in Winter, making it the perfect time to upgrade your tools.

Buying Seeds

  • General Store sells season-specific seeds (no Star Rank).
  • Huang’s Shop sells all seeds year-round.
  • Each seed bag covers a 3×3 area.
  • You can store extra seeds in your Tool Box.

Tilling and Planting

  1. Use the Hoe to till a 3×3 plot.
  2. You might find:
    • Coins (1 coin = 1 G)
    • A single Power Berry
    • A mole (they don’t damage crops)
  3. If you’re quick, switch to the Hammer and whack the mole before it disappears. Every 100 moles you hit gives you 1 Farm Degree Rank point (up to 100 points).
  4. Stand on the tilled soil and plant your seeds. Unlike earlier versions, you can walk over crops, so feel free to plant them adjacent to one another.
  5. Use the Watering Can to water your crops once a day. Watering twice won’t speed up growth. Rainy days don’t require watering.
  6. After several days, harvest your crops. Some crops are one-time harvests, while others can be harvested multiple times.

Crop Star Rank

Each crop has a Star Rank — the higher the stars, the higher the selling price. (Note: flowers do not have Star Rank.)

The Star Rank of harvested crops is based on your field level. Starting in Year 2, Gotts will offer upgrades at his workshop:

Field LevelAvailableCost
Level 2Year 2+20,000 G
Level 3Year 3+50,000 G
Level 4Year 4+100,000 G
Level 5Year 5+300,000 G

Higher levels increase your chance of harvesting higher-star crops.

Example:

  • Level 1 (default) mostly yields ★1 crops, with a chance for ★2.
  • Level 2 can yield ★1, ★2, and possibly ★3.
  • Level 4 can produce up to ★5 crops.
  • Level 5 increases the chance of ★5 even more.

Fodder Grass

In the bottom-left corner of your field, there’s a small grass patch. Use the Sickle to harvest it into Fodder Grass for livestock (but not for chickens — they eat Chicken Feed, which you can make by placing Corn in the mill near the Coop).

  • Buy Grass Seeds from the General Store (500 G each).
  • Plant one, and it will slowly spread to empty tiles.
  • Grass grows only during Spring, Summer, and Autumn.
  • Winter kills all grass, so let your animals out at your own risk.

Grass Growth Tips

  • 25% chance each day to spread to nearby empty tiles.
  • You can block grass with small rocks, lumber, or fencing.
  • In Spring, there’s a 70% chance that dead grass from Winter will regrow. So, it’s smart to leave some patches before Winter starts.

Seasonal Weeds from Grass Harvest

Occasionally, you’ll find seasonal colored grasses while harvesting fodder:

  • Spring: Blue, Orange, Yellow Grass
  • Summer: Blue, Green, Purple, Red Grass
  • Autumn: Green, Indigo, Red Grass

How to Force Crops to Survive Into the Next Season

You can exploit the game’s fatigue system to carry crops into the next season — perfect for one-time harvest crops or extending multi-harvest crops.

Steps:

  1. On the 30th day of the current season, leave your crops untouched.
  2. Drain your Stamina (STA) and increase your Fatigue (FAT) to near the blue face icon (FAT ≈ 80).
  3. Use tools past midnight to raise FAT to 95–99.
  4. Stay awake until 5:59 AM.
    • If you have mystery books from the Harvest Goddess, read them to pass time.
    • If not, just wait outside.
  5. At 5:59 AM, the game will:
    • Heal 5 FAT
    • Add 10 FAT due to no sleep Example: 93 FAT → (93 – 5 + 10) = 98 FAT → not enough
You need at least 95 FAT before 6:00 AM to reach 100 FAT and faint.
  6. You’ll wake up on Spring 2 (or new season) at the Clinic.
    • Since the fainting cutscene happens before crop withering occurs, your crops will still be alive!
    • You’ll also regain full stamina and reset your fatigue.
