Pets

In this article, we’ll dive into the details of pets in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (SoS FoMT).

Pets in this game are different from livestock. While livestock are raised for their products, pets are mainly companions that also help in specific ways depending on the type.

For example, in the early part of the game, you’ll receive a pony. Once fully grown, this pony becomes a ridable horse that lets you travel around Mineral Town faster.

Besides walking, you can travel around Mineral Town by riding your horse. You can raise a horse starting in Spring by first befriending Mugi, the owner of Yodel Ranch.

On or after Spring 4, Mugi will visit your farm one morning and ask if you’re interested in raising a foal that he can’t keep at his ranch. If you accept, you’ll get to name the pony, and Mugi will place it in your horse barn.

  • The horse comes in only one color (brown).
  • It cannot be bred.
  • It does not die from sickness or old age.

If you refuse to take the pony, Mugi will return the next day to offer again. If you decline a second time, you lose the chance to get a horse permanently—it cannot be bought from any shop.

The foal will stay in the horse barn beside your livestock barn. On sunny days, it will go outside and return by 8:00 PM. The pony feeds itself and is too small to ride initially. It takes 90 days to mature, and once it does, it will wear a red bandana around its neck.

During those 90 days, you need to raise your friendship level with the horse. On Day 90, Mugi will visit your farm in the morning to check on the horse’s condition. If your friendship level is too low, he will take the horse back.

You need at least 4 friendship hearts with the horse to keep it. You can check the current friendship level under the Relationship > Pets menu.

Gaining Friendship Points (FP) with the Horse:

ActionPoints
Use Brush (once/day)+1
Talk to the horse+1
Whistle (C Button)+1

Each heart = 24 FP (Total: 10 hearts / 240 FP)

If Mugi takes your horse, he’ll keep it for one in-game year. After that, he’ll return it to you as a fully grown horse.

Once matured, you can ride your horse anywhere in Mineral Town—except inside villager houses, of course!

Derby Festival

A fully grown horse can participate in the Horse Derby held on Spring 18 and Autumn 18.

Mugi will visit your house on the morning of the 17th to ask if you’d like to enter. If you say yes, you and your horse will race against three random racers in the third and final race of the day.

During the race, colored heart bubbles will appear above your horse’s head to indicate stamina:

  • 💚: Full of energy.
  • 💛: Tired—stop clicking for a while.
  • ❤️: Very tired—horse will slow down.

The more friendship hearts your horse has, the more stamina it will have for racing.

Prizes:

  • First win: Power Berry + 20 FP with all villagers in Rose Plaza
  • Subsequent wins: +20 FP with all villagers only

Pets (General)

Besides the horse, you can keep up to 5 pets at once, chosen from a selection of 10. However, pets are not free—you must purchase them from Van’s Pet Shop.

How to Unlock Van’s Pet Shop:

  1. Unlock Van: Offer gifts to the Harvest Goddess for 30 days (one gift per day). On the next sunny Wednesday, Van will visit your house and introduce himself.
  2. Wait until the 15th of any season: On the 15th (sunny days only), Van will set up his Pet Shop in Rose Plaza, open from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Pets don’t herd animals like in other Story of Seasons games. They are purely decorative and participate in Summer 1 Beach Opening Day.

All pets start as babies and grow into adults after 60 days.

Pets live inside your house. On sunny days, they will go outside and roam your farm, returning by 8:00 PM. On rainy days, they stay indoors.

Raising Pet Friendship

You can view each pet’s friendship level in the Relationships > Pets menu.

  • Max: 10 hearts (250 LP)
ActionLP Gained
Talk+1/day
Whistle (C)+1/day
Pet Treat+1/day

Pet Treats can be purchased from Van’s Pet Shop for 1,000 G each.

Using the Brush has no effect on pet LP.

To buy a second pet, your current pet must have 8 or more hearts.

To buy more:

  • 3rd pet: Total 16 hearts from the first 2 pets
  • 4th pet: Total 24 hearts
  • 5th pet: Total 32 hearts

Check your eligibility in the Farm Profile menu. If the 5 pet icons are bright green, you’re eligible to buy a new pet. If they’re dark green, raise your pet friendship first.

Playing with Pets

Each pet has a green Fetch Training Bar under their Relationship Profile. This bar increases as you play fetch using either a ball or a Frisbee.

Ball Training

  • Pet Ball: Buy from Huang for 100 G (available from Autumn Year 1).
  • You can throw it indoors or outdoors.
  • Only the first throw of the day increases the fetch bar.

Playing Frisbee

  • Pet Frisbee: Buy from Huang for 5,000 G (available from Autumn Year 1).
  • Only adult pets can play.
  • Play at Mineral Beach (Spring to Autumn) by interacting with the signboard near the bench.

During Frisbee play:

  • The green zone on the power bar indicates a safe range.
  • Press Click when the arrow lands in the green zone for the best chance of a successful catch.
  • A successful catch increases the fetch bar.
  • The more catches you land, the wider the green zone becomes.

Max catches per day depend on pet friendship:

HeartsCatches/day
0Cannot play
1–21x/day
3–42x/day
5–73x/day
8–94x/day
105x/day

Once you start throwing over 30 meters and have 50% or more fetch bar filled, your pet might dig up hidden items while chasing the Frisbee.

Possible Dig-Up Items:

  • Agate
  • Gold Ore
  • Silver Ore
  • Copper Ore
  • Fossil
  • Trash

Make sure you have an empty item slot in your rucksack to receive dug-up items.

You must store the Frisbee in your rucksack (not the cabinet) to use it on the beach.
