Livestock

A farming simulation wouldn’t be complete without raising animals—and Story of Seasons is famous for its livestock systems.

In SoS: A Wonderful Life, there are five different types of animals you can raise in the Barn and Coop. Each animal produces useful products you can sell, gift, eat, or use in cooking recipes.

This guide covers everything you need to know about livestock—from where to get them, how to care for them, breeding tips, and more!

Barn Animals: Cows, Sheep, Goats

The Barn is one of the largest buildings on your farm. This is where your Cows, Sheep, and Goats live. Each animal needs its own feeding bin, which you must fill every day to keep them happy.

  • Initial capacity: 8 animals
  • Upgrade cost: 120,000 G (increases capacity to 16 animals)
  • Upgrade via: Ledger in front of your house

Feeding

These animals eat Fodder, which you can:

  • Buy from the Ledger
  • Or grow by planting grass with fertilizer, then cutting it with a Sickle (Fodder is stored in the Silo automatically)

Use the bell behind the barn to let animals out to graze. As long as there’s enough grass, you don’t need to feed them manually.

Always bring them inside during bad weather, or their affection will drop and they’ll produce lower-quality products.

Animal Care & Affection

Unlike poultry, barn animals need more care to build affection and increase product quality.

Daily Tasks:

  • Talk to and hug your animals regularly
  • Brush them with a Brush (buy from Van)
  • Milk or shear them with the correct tools

Tools:

  • Milker: Used for Cows and Goats (you get one for free at the start)
  • Clipper: Used to shear Sheep

Sheep produce different wool colors based on affection. Higher affection = better wool!

Milk Products

At the start, you get one Normal Cow (female). You can later purchase three additional breeds from the Ledger:

  • Brown Cow – Makes special milk for cheese & butter
  • Marble Cow – Also produces milk for cheese & butter
  • Star Cow – Produces Star Milk, the most valuable milk in the game

Also available:

  • Goat Milk – Produced year-round by adult female goats

You can:

  • Sell the milk
  • Use it in recipes
  • Give as gifts
  • Process into cheese/butter in the Processing Room

Breeding Livestock

You can breed livestock in two ways, but make sure you have space in the barn first!

Option 1: Natural Breeding

If you own a male and female of the same species, they may mate naturally. You’ll know if an animal is pregnant by:

  • Talking to them
  • Checking the barn’s chalkboard

Option 2: Ledger Breeding

You can order a breeding service for your female animal via the Ledger.

  • It costs money
  • You’ll have to wait a few days to confirm if it worked

Birth Process:

  • Pregnant animals will show red cheeks
  • You’ll be asked to isolate them in the gated barn area
(If you forget, Nature Sprites will remind you)
  • After a few days, the baby will be born
  • You’ll be called back to name the newborn

The mother will produce Mother’s Milk for a few days, which you must feed to the baby manually. Once grown, the calf becomes a full adult.

After birth, the mother produces high-quality S Milk for a while—great for profit!

What If a Goat Stops Producing Milk?

In SoS AWL, goats will eventually stop giving milk. When that happens, the only solution is to sell the goat to free up space.

  • Go to the Ledger to sell animals
  • You’ll get half their original price
  • Takakura will take them away the next day

Coop Animals: Chickens and Ducks

Your Coop can hold up to 8 birds when you start the game.
There are no limits on gender or species as long as you stay under 8 animals.

Birds eat Birdseed, sold at the Ledger for 100 G per bag. Chickens and Ducks eat the same feed.

Feeding:

  • Spread birdseed in the feeder tray inside the coop
  • Refill it daily to keep them happy

To increase affection:

  • Hold and talk to your birds daily

You can use the bell outside the coop to call all birds outside at once.

Coop Upgrade:

  • Cost: 100,000 G
  • Increases capacity to 16 birds

Eggs

Once your hen matures, she’ll begin laying eggs:

  • Indoors: eggs are usually under the chicken
  • Outdoors: eggs are laid on the ground—bring the bird back in to spot where it laid

Search carefully around the yard if you’ve let your chickens roam with the barn animals!

Fertilized Eggs

If you have a male and female of the same bird species, you might get a Fertilized Egg:

  • Pink-colored
  • Sells for more than regular eggs

You can place it in the incubator if there’s an empty slot in the coop.
After a few days:

  • The egg hatches into a chick
  • You’ll be notified of its gender and can name it
  • Chicks grow into adults and lay eggs (if female)

Repeat the process to grow your bird population—but you can’t incubate eggs if the coop is full.

How to Get New Livestock

Buying animals is simple:

  • Open the Ledger in front of your house
  • Choose the type (cow, sheep, goat, chicken, duck)
  • Pick male or female

Be mindful of gender differences, especially if you plan to breed your animals later.

Animals ordered from the Ledger will arrive the next day. If you’re not nearby when the animal arrives, Takakura will call you back to the farm so you can meet the new animal, name it, and choose where its feeding trough will be placed.

How to Get Ducks

In addition to cows and sheep, there are also a few other types of animals available in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, including goats and ducks.

Ducks live on your farm just like any other animal, but they cannot be purchased from the Ledger and must be unlocked in a specific way.

To get ducks, you’ll first need to buy a Pond from the Ledger for 10,000 G. After purchasing it, Takakura will build the Pond inside your livestock enclosure, and he’ll let you know once the construction is complete.

Usually, in Summer of Year 2, if you still have two empty slots in your Coop, your spouse will call you over to show you two ducks—one male and one female—that they’ve found. You’ll then be asked to name them, and the ducks will be automatically placed in your Coop.
