Even if you already have a variety of crops growing on your farm, you shouldn’t overlook the value of fruit trees in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life.
With five basic fruit types and over a dozen hybrid tree fruits, these space-consuming trees take time to grow but reward you with a generous yield of fruit from a single tree.
This guide covers the growing seasons for all fruit trees, along with tips on maximizing your orchard space and using fertilizer to improve crop quality.
Planting
There are five basic tree seeds you can purchase from Vesta’s Farm starting in Spring of Year 1:

Second-generation “mysterious” trees are created by mixing basic tree seeds or fruit with Vinnie. Third-generation “rare” trees come from mixing second-generation fruits.
Tree seeds are not affected by soil fertility. Even rare fruit trees grow fine in the least fertile soil next to your house.
To plant a tree, first till the soil with a hoe, then plant the seed. The tiles surrounding the base of the tree will automatically become paved tiles.
Trees require empty space around their trunk. In the original GameCube and PlayStation 2 versions of A Wonderful Life, trees could be stunted if you planted too close. In the remake, the auto-paving around the trunk prevents this issue.
To save space, consider planting trees along the edges of your field. This allows the paved area to overlap with unusable land, minimizing space waste.
If you want to remove a tree, simply use your tools (hoe) on its trunk. The surrounding pavement will revert to regular soil.
Like crops, trees grow faster in Summer and slower in Winter. Growth begins at midnight the day after planting and accumulates in 12-hour intervals.
Example: If you plant an Apple Seed on Summer 2 and it needs 5 days to grow during Summer, it will become mature by noon on Summer 7.
Fertilizer

Tree leaf color indicates its grade:
- B-Rank: Light green leaves
- A-Rank: Medium green leaves
- S-Rank: Deep green leaves
To improve tree grade, apply Fertilizer from Vesta’s Farm to the tree’s base. This can be expensive due to the high amount required:
| Tree Generation | B to A | A to S |
|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 (Basic) | 27 | 18 |
| Gen 2 (Mysterious) | 36 | 27 |
| Gen 3 (Rare) | 54 | 45 |
There are two easier alternatives to improve tree quality:
- Seed Mixing via Vinnie
Mix a higher-rank crop seed with a tree seed. This may produce a higher-grade tree seed.- Works better when mixing seed + seed rather than raw product + seed.
- Vinnie can sometimes fail or produce a higher-grade crop seed instead.
- Fertilizer Spreaders
These cost 60,000 G each and are installed in any of three plots.
Load with fertilizer, and the spreader will apply it automatically at 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM to all non-S-Rank crops and trees.
Once a tree reaches S-Rank, the spreader will skip it.
If you improve the tree’s quality mid-season, higher-grade fruits will begin appearing the next year.
Harvest Season

Trees typically bloom in the season prior to fruiting. Once fruiting season begins, it takes about 2 days for fruits to be ready for harvest. You can harvest in two ways:
- Shake the Tree
Stand beside the tree. When the field cursor turns yellow, press the Shake command. Any ripe fruit will fall and be automatically collected. - Wait for Fruit to Drop
Ripe fruit may also fall naturally. Pick it up like any other forageable item.
You’ll often do both methods during harvest. Fruit may not be ripe yet when you shake, but can ripen and fall later.
Each tree yields about 16 fruits over 6 days in its season. While trees may bloom again after the fruit has dropped, they will not fruit again until the following year (Chapters 1–6) or the next in-game year (Chapter 7).
In the original A Wonderful Life, trees could yield around 24 fruits per season. In the remake:
- Tree yields are reduced by ~60%
- Fruit prices are increased by 450–500%
Another advantage of the remake is that trees can begin fruiting mid-season as soon as they mature—no need to bloom first. However, any remaining fruit will disappear when the season ends.
