In Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, pets are an essential part of your farm life experience. Besides raising cows, sheep, goats, chickens, and ducks, you can also take care of a dog, a horse, and a cat. Each pet plays a different role and brings a bit of charm to your daily routine.
This guide covers how to obtain and care for all available pets in the game.
Dog

At the start of the game, during your arrival cutscene in Forgotten Valley, two dogs will approach you and Takakura. You’ll be asked to choose one to adopt.
- The dog you don’t choose will be taken to town by Takakura to find a new home.
- The only difference between the two dogs is their appearance—their behavior and care needs are the same.
After choosing, you can name your dog, and it will live in a doghouse next to your house.
Dog Care
- Feeding: Place mushrooms or wild plants in the food bowl beside the doghouse.
- Training: The dog can learn up to four different tricks. Train it consistently to raise its skill level.
- Uses: A well-trained dog with high friendship can help herd livestock on your farm.
- Companionship: You can call the dog anytime, and it will follow you loyally.
Horse

During Summer of Year 1, if you’ve been actively working on your farm, Takakura will give you a horse.
- He will call you to the barn and ask you to guess its color—whatever you choose is the color you’ll receive.
- This is the only horse you’ll get, and the color cannot be changed.
Horse Care
- Feeding: Assign a feed trough for the horse in the barn. It needs daily feeding like cows and sheep.
- Brushing: Brush your horse regularly to keep it clean and happy.
- Barn Behavior: The horse acts like regular livestock—leaves and returns with the herd.
Riding the Horse
- Mounting: Approach the horse from the side. The “Talk” prompt will change to “Ride”.
- Travel: You can use the horse to ride around the valley, making it easier to get to places quickly.
If You Can’t Ride
- Your horse may be asleep. Use the whistle button to wake it up before trying again.
Cat

In Year 2, Romana will visit your farm and offer you a cat, saying she has too many.
- After accepting, she’ll leave the cat in your care, and you’ll be able to name it.
Cat Care
- Feeding: The shared food bowl next to the doghouse now feeds both your dog and cat.
- Interaction: You can pick up the cat and walk around the valley with it.
- Friendship: Feed and interact with your cat to raise friendship. While it cannot be trained, affection increases over time.
- Behavior: The cat naps around the farm and interacts with other animals like a real pet would.
