Rare Crops

After learning how to create hybrid crops in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, there’s an advanced level of crop breeding you can explore—Rare Crops, also known as Gen 3 Hybrids.

With a total of 47 Rare Crops in the game, discovering the correct recipe for each one can be a bit tricky.

This guide compiles dozens of recipes to help you create Gen 3 Rare Crops, along with an explanation of how the breeding system works.

Rare Crops and Gen 3 Hybrids

In Year 2, you’ll be introduced to Vinnie, a quirky three-headed plant who lives in Takakura house. After becoming friends with Vinnie, you gain access to hybrid crop creation (Gen 2 crops).

Although Gen 2 hybrids already sell for a high price, you can take things further by crossbreeding two hybrid crops to create a Rare Crop.

Once you discover a valid combination, a short cutscene will play where Vinnie tastes the seeds to check if the combination is correct.

If successful, Vinnie will announce that he has created something rare, and you’ll be shown an image of the fully grown crop so you can preview what it will look like at harvest time.

Naming Rare Crops
Each Rare Crop can be named freely by the player, using up to 8 characters. The default names are formatted as “Rare Crop #” (e.g., Rare Crop 8).

There are 47 total Rare Crops in the game, each with a unique genetic formula. As you might expect, these are some of the most valuable items you can grow and sell.

Understanding Rare Crop Genetics

There’s a bit of science behind the breeding system, but the good news is: Rare Crops follow a consistent formula.

  • A Gen 2 Hybrid is made by combining two base crops (e.g., Tomato + Turnip = Turnmato).
  • A Gen 3 Rare Crop is made by combining two Gen 2 Hybrids (e.g., Turnmato + another hybrid crop).

This means each Rare Crop carries the genetics of four base crops.

Example:
Rare Crop 20 is made by fusing MeloMelo and Carberry.

  • MeloMelo = Melon + Watermelon
  • Carberry = Carrot + Strawberry
Thus, Rare Crop 20 has the genetic makeup of Melon, Watermelon, Carrot, and Strawberry.

This is where Gen 3 crops truly take form.

Crop Fusion Recipes

It might seem confusing at first, but once you try it in-game, the system becomes intuitive.

Due to the sheer number of possible combinations, make sure to keep a stockpile of hybrid crops in your refrigerator so you’re ready to experiment.

Rare Crops are listed in numerical order in the recipe table below. The number corresponds to the default name of the crop (e.g., Rare Crop 8 is the eighth entry in the recipe list).

Note: By default, Rare Crop 10 is not included in the game. Since this guide follows the cooking recipe list, we will skip RC.10.

Note: Rare Crop 24 and Rare Crop 25 are created using the same parent crops, but the difference lies in the time of day you ask Vinnie to create the seed.

  • If you request the fusion between 6:00 AM and 5:59 PM, you’ll get R.C.24.
  • If you use the same combination between 6:00 PM and 5:59 AM, you’ll get R.C.25.
