Matthew is one of the eligible marriage candidates in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life. He’s Vesta’s younger brother and helps run her vegetable farm. Though often gruff and short-tempered, there’s more to Matthew than meets the eye.

Matthew has a cynical personality and often speaks in a blunt, somewhat unfriendly tone. However, this doesn’t reflect his true self—deep down, he’s actually shy and reserved around others.

He tends to keep his distance due to low self-esteem and lingering frustration about his health. Formerly a city resident, the urban lifestyle took a toll on his well-being. He eventually moved to his sister’s quiet countryside farm for a more peaceful environment.

While the slower pace of farm life helped refresh him, his recovery has been gradual. His lingering irritation with his situation can make him difficult to approach. Despite that, as you get to know him better, he begins to open up. If you marry Matthew, he will continue working at Vesta’s farm.

As you walk by, Vesta calls out to you and asks how your farm is going. She says if you ever need help, you can count on her and her brother, Matthew.

She calls Matthew over from the field, even though he doesn’t like being interrupted. Vesta insists.

She asks Matthew if he’d help you if needed. You’re new in the valley, and she doesn’t want you to leave just because you have no one to rely on.

Matthew isn’t thrilled, but before things get awkward, Vesta remembers she has something to do and leaves. She tells you to ask Matthew anything.

Matthew is annoyed to be left alone with you. After a bit of silence, he asks if there’s anything wrong with your crops.

You say everything’s fine. He pauses, says he’ll get back to work, and walks off without another word.

Matthew tries to start a casual conversation but quickly gives up and bluntly asks if you want something.

1A: “What do you like to do in your free time?“	He says nothing special. He likes spending time at the Bluebird Café and asks if you like vegetables.
2A: “Can’t get enough of ’em!“	He agrees and says he eats a lot of vegetables. He reminds you it’s easy to neglect vegetables when living alone and offers to help you grow them.
3A: “You’re so nice! Thank you.” (+10 AP)	He’s a bit embarrassed but not upset. He invites you to stop by anytime.
3B: “I’m on top of it” (-5 AP)	He feels like he wasn’t much help.
2B: “They’re kinda gross.” (-5 AP)	Matthew is shocked. You quickly leave the house.
1B: “I’m busy right now, actually.” (-5 AP)	He understands. Farming can be time-consuming.

2A: “I won’t! I promise!“	He says he had a weird dream: he thought he saw Cecilia calling him, but it turned out to be Vesta. He wonders if it’s silly to worry about such dreams.
3A: “Not at all.” (+10 AP)	He’s relieved and thanks you for understanding. He gives you Vegetable Juice.
3B: “HA HA HA HA HA HA” (-5 AP)	Bad idea to laugh. He walks away.
2B: “Oh, come on, just tell me” (-5 AP)	He tells you off and leaves.
1B: “Fine then. I’m leaving” (-5 AP)	He agrees and suggests it’s best not to worry about such things.

Cecilia greets you and calls over Matthew. Suddenly, Cecilia feels unwell and decides to rest, asking you to talk to Matthew for a bit.

Matthew is reluctant at first but then asks if you’d like to chat.

1A: “Sure!“	He admits he doesn’t talk much, but you’re different. He asks how you feel about living in the valley.
2A: “You bet!” (+10 AP)	He’s glad to hear it. As you talk, he spots a fish and asks if you want to go fishing. You smile, making him nervous, and he says he’ll head home.
2B: “Not so good, actually.” (-5 AP)	He says it’s tough, but possible. If you have time to talk, you have time to work. He leaves to check on Cecilia.
1B: “No thanks.” (-5 AP)	He’s fine with that and says he’ll go check on Cecilia.

You find Matthew alone near the windmill. He doesn’t want to talk and asks you to leave.

1A: “What happened?“	He talks about his poor health, which stopped him from working in the city. His condition hasn’t improved since moving here. He believes this may be permanent.
2A: “No, you won’t. You’ll get better!“	He mocks your optimism and says you don’t understand. He asks you to leave.
3A: “No, I’m staying right here.” (+10 AP)	He stops, then quietly says he’s going home. Before leaving, he turns back and thanks you.
2B: “Yeah, maybe.” (-5 AP)	He again asks to be left alone.
1B: “Okay, okay! I’ll leave.“	You walk away and leave him alone.

Matthew takes you outside the farm and accepts the Blue Feather. He says he plans to continue helping on his sister’s farm. You’ve done well on your own, but now he’ll be by your side to handle things together.

Matthew asks if you have time to take a walk with him. Along the way:

You see Gary struggling with a heavy bag. You help while Matthew watches.
Later, you cheer up a frustrated Hugh. Again, Matthew observes.

At the beach, you walk together along the shoreline. Matthew trips and falls, feeling embarrassed. He reflects that he used to think only certain people needed protection—but now, seeing you help others, he wants to protect you too.

He realizes you shouldn’t stay in the shadows—you should stand together, side by side.
