Your Child

In Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, you can have a child with your spouse after getting married. Each child has unique base characteristics depending on who you marry.

In addition, their interests and potential career path can shift over time based on how you raise them and your daily actions. Ultimately, your child’s future job is determined by how their “skills” develop by the end of the Twilight Chapter.

Choosing the Child’s Gender

Your child’s gender is determined at the end of Chapter 1, during the forest pond wedding cutscene. At that moment, you’ll be given three dialogue options:

  • “It’d be nice to have a boy.” → You’ll have a son.
  • “I’d be happy with a boy or girl!” → You’ll have a daughter.
  • “I’d be happy with a boy or girl!” (yes, the same text again) → The gender will be randomized.

Growth Stages

You and your spouse will have a child in Chapter 2, and they’ll go through multiple growth stages over the course of the story.

Chapter 2: Branching (Toddler Stage)

During this stage, your child is still a toddler. They mostly wander around the farm, and while you can’t give them gifts, you can still pick them up, talk to them, and show them items. These early interactions already begin to shape their personality and interests.

Their development is also affected by their other parent and the way you treat them.

Chapter 3: Blessings (Child Stage)

Your child is now a young child and has their own bedroom. The way the room is decorated depends on their preferences and skills. While their interests can still be influenced during this chapter, it’s highly recommended to start guiding them as early as Chapter 2.

Chapter 4: Blooming (Teen Stage)

Your child has now grown into a teenager. During this time, both you and your spouse will move into your own room, and your child will continue to personalize theirs based on their current inclinations. By now, your child may begin to rebel and become harder to influence. How rebellious they are depends on their personality and who their other parent is.

Personality

As your child grows up, their personality will gradually develop. While your choice of spouse determines their starting personality, it’s your daily interactions (or lack thereof) during Chapters 2, 3, and 4 that truly shape how their personality evolves.

Personality is not the same as your child’s interests or future career skills, and it can’t be viewed through any in-game menu. You’ll need to observe your child’s behavior and reactions to figure it out.

How to Influence Personality

The way you interact with your child plays a major role in their personality development, especially during the early chapters. As time goes on, your influence will gradually lessen.

  • Frequent interaction — like talking to your child, showing them items, and giving them gifts — will lead to a child who is happy, friendly, and sociable.
  • Neglecting your child — by ignoring them or failing to engage — can result in a child who is moody, distant, and potentially depressed.

Starting Personality by Spouse

Your child’s initial personality depends on who you marry. Here’s a quick breakdown:

SpouseStarting Personality
CeciliaCalm and introverted
MollyFriendly and mischievous
GustafaCalm and introverted
LuminaCalm and introverted
RockFriendly and mischievous

Gifts

During the first year, your child won’t accept any gifts. However, they might react to certain items when you show them, which can influence their likes and career skills. What they like is partly based on who their other parent is.

In the second year, they’ll begin to accept gifts, and their preferences will start to match what you’ve shown them or what their parent likes.

By the third year, your child will develop specific favorites, which are listed below depending on who your spouse is.

Child Interests

A child’s likes and skills are shaped by your interactions and daily actions.

Each day, your child naturally engages with the world around them. Over time, they will develop abilities in six areas:

  • Animal Care
  • Farming
  • Athletics
  • Music
  • Art
  • Academics

You can check their progress via the “What I Like” and “What I’m Good At” sections in the resident information menu. These reflect:

  • What I Like = what they personally enjoy
  • What I’m Good At = what they’ve developed skill in

Room Expansion

During the Megumi chapter, your house will be expanded further, and the child’s room will be added. A bookshelf in the child’s room will display books that change depending on their interests.

  • The first book is usually selected based on the child’s “What I Like” field.
  • The second book is also based on “What I Like”.
  • The third book is usually based on “What I’m Good At,” depending on which skill area the child has most developed.

This pattern will continue in later chapters, so be sure to check their bookshelf often.

Child Influence

There are six possible career paths your child can follow as they grow:

  • Rancher (Animal Care)
  • Farmer (Crop Cultivation)
  • Athlete
  • Artist
  • Musician
  • Scholar

At the end of Chapter 6:

  • If your child becomes a Rancher or Farmer, they will inherit the farm.
  • If your child becomes a Scholar, Artist, Musician, or Athlete, they will leave Forgotten Valley, leaving your spouse and Takakura behind to manage the farm.

Initial Influence Based on Spouse

The person you marry in Chapter 1 will significantly influence your child’s initial interests and skills starting in Chapter 2. Your child will begin with three dominant areas of interest depending on your chosen spouse.

Here is a breakdown of the early influence for each spouse:

Starry Night Festival Influence

During the Starry Night Festival in Winter, you will be able to make a “wish” for your child’s future. This wish will greatly influence the child’s interest development and potentially guide them toward a specific career path.

Personality & Career Outcome

Your child’s personality traits as they grow up are also influenced by who you marry, which affects their:

  • Dialogue
  • Room decor
  • How easily they bond with NPCs
  • Interest growth and reactions to items/activities

These factors, combined with your interactions and guidance throughout the game, determine which of the six career outcomes your child will ultimately pursue by the end of Chapter 6.
